FAQ English Placement Test OOPT

The Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT) is used as a placement test for English at h_da.

You can register for the OOPT via my.h-da - My University Portal.

You can also find the test via "Search for Lectures" ("placement test"). You may have to delete the preset course in the search mask first.

Please only register if you can take the test within the next week of receiving your login details.

Once you have registered, you will receive a message with all further information to your student e-mail address as soon as possible.

You will receive important information on how to take the test in advance by e-mail.

As the aim of the test is to assess your current knowledge, no preparation is required or indeed helpful. Remember: this test is designed to place you in a course at a level that is suitable for you. It is therefore in your interest that the result realistically reflect your level of knowledge!

The result is presented with an additional 0. For example, B10 means level B1. The level you have achieved in the test is the level at which you can now take a course, in this case a course at level B1.

The levels are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). 

The Language Center does not offer English courses at levels A1 and A2. You can acquire these levels e.g. at a Volkshochschule (adult education center) or a private language institute if you would like to attend a course at level B1 at h_da afterwards.

If you reach level C2, you can attend courses at level C1 or take another language instead.

No, the test remains valid for your entire course of study. It cannot be taken again. Your language skills will improve if you take part in an English course. The level achieved (no longer the test result) then serves as the basis for enrollment in further courses and appears in your transcript of records.

You cannot be placed at a higher level after studying the language on your own. A higher placement is only possible upon presentation of a recognized and valid certificate (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS).

No. The English placement test only tests passive language skills and is solely for your placement so that you can subsequently take courses in English. We do not issue a certificate for participation and results.

Please send an e-mail to englisch-einstufung@h-da.de stating your name and matriculation number . You will then receive a new invitation to the test.
