German as a foreign language

German is the most widely spoken mother tongue in the European Union. Some 90 to 105 million people worldwide speak German as their native language. Furthermore, there are at least 55 million people in the European Union alone who speak German as a foreign language. Incidentally, German is not only spoken in Germany, but also in Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, eastern Belgium, South Tyrol and Alsace.
